Why I started Lushim
When I made aliyah, one of the first things I wanted to do was find my way into Israel’s pottery scene. What I didn’t expect was how hard it would be to get equipment at a fair price, because almost everything has to be imported.
What surprised me most was the clay. Most of the clay potters here use comes from overseas. Shipping heavy bags of clay across the world is bad for the environment and expensive for you.
So my goal is to make high-grade pottery clay here in Israel, with a focus on porcelain. Some raw materials will still need to be imported, but mixing the clay here means far less weight on ships and lower prices on the shelf.
To get there I need to raise money, and that’s what this shop is for. I import the equipment I’ve already been importing for my own studio, and I only sell what I know is good.
Most of it comes from China. I know that can sound like a warning sign, but China has one of the oldest pottery cultures in the world. If you buy from the right makers in Jingdezhen, the country’s porcelain capital, the equipment is as good as anything from the US or Europe, and often better.
I’m travelling to Jingdezhen in 2027 to find new products. If there’s something you’ve been looking for, tell me.
